First time for everything (tdk fic)
Aug. 26th, 2008 04:29 pmThere's the first time for everything, so here it comes - my first fic in English. Also, first time in this fandom.
Title: First time for everything
Pairing: pre-slash Bruce/Gordon
Rating: PG
Summary: The first time he had almost (thank Lord for 'almost') had an erection because of Jim Gordon in a suit, was, well, really, really awkward.
AN: For
noelia_g (and thanks for the beta!)
The first time he had almost (thank Lord for 'almost') had an erection because of Jim Gordon in a suit, was, well, really, really awkward. It might have been because he was in the middle of his own living room, in the middle of his own party, talking with the Governor’s wife. Probably, yes.
Later that night he was still processing this fact. The almost-erection, not the awkwardness (he didn’t care, nobody had noticed anything).
Nothing new about being attracted to a man (didn’t happen very often, but often enough not to be very surprising), nothing really new with looking at Jim Gordon that way either... But still, it was only a few times, always as the Batman (as if it changed anything; it did), always behind the mask and well, never that strong. More as a glimpse of something in Gordon’s face, in his eyes, some warm feeling about his devotion for the city... oh my God, kill me now, please, before I choke myself with my own sweet vomit...
He laid his head on the desk and groaned quietly.
The sight from earlier came back. Jim Gordon, standing tall between all the people he didn’t really understand, didn’t like, didn’t respect. But as the commissioner you have to be where you have to be, and Gordon knew it. He could walk the walk and talk the talk with any of Bruce Wayne’s guests.
And don’t forget the black suit. Bruce for sure couldn’t. Hello, Junior, long time no see.
This time, the groan was for a totally different reason.
“Something wrong, Master Wayne?”
Alfred was holding a plate with a jug and a small cup. Bruce straightened up.
“No, no. It’s just... Jim Gordon was here tonight and...”
It would have been perfectly innocent. Would have been. If he didn’t shift in his chair. Alfred didn’t miss it.
“Oh.”
“I don’t like your ‘oh’.”
“‘Ah’ perhaps, then?”
“I hate you.”
“I know you do, sir. Tea?”
Bruce nodded and let his head fall on the table again. He didn’t lift it when Alfred came closer with the tea, but listened carefully as the man moved to the door.
And then Alfred stopped and half-turned.
“He’s not... your usual demographic.”
Bruce snorted and looked at him.
“Good one.”
Alfred was near the door, but turned his head again.
“That he is,” he smiled and left.
His ‘little problem’ long gone (that would just be scary, otherwise), Bruce stood up and moved to the window.
Well, that would be it as to Alfred’s approval if he needed one (if he ever doubted he’d get it). But it didn’t change the fact that Bruce didn’t have any idea what to do. Or if he even wanted to (ha, ha).
Jim Gordon wasn’t an easy choice in any respect. Almost certainly straight – hello, ex-wife and kids. And yes, married (divorced) didn’t always mean straight, but didn’t scream ‘gay!’ either (Neither do arms full of playboy bunnies, sir. Well, touché, Scary-Alfred-In-My-Head.). Also, he wasn’t someone whom Bruce could impress with his Lamborgini (or two), that’s for sure. Actually, there’s only one thing he knew that could impress the commissioner, but that was also the one thing Bruce wasn’t willing to show. Not now, maybe never. Not for this.
He’s looking at the city at night and thinking about Gotham and his role in it (roles, Bruce Wayne’s and Batman’s) as well as Gordon’s (there’s only one). And Bruce was many things but he wasn’t stupid and he knew that while Batman’s path was close to the one commissioner chose, Bruce’s didn’t even come near it.
Yes, well. We’ll see.

I loved that part! So funny yet it shows their relationship so well.

Date: 2008-08-26 03:26 pm (UTC)I really like the POV you have created here, and of course, your Alfred is a pleasure to read, both the real and imaginary one.
I enjoyed this. Especially "demographic" really amused me. And yet there is some sadness in this story, of course. Bruce likes his angst, doesn't he.

Date: 2008-08-26 04:43 pm (UTC)Oh, just lovely, absolutely adore the interaction between Bruce and Alfred, and Bruce and Scary-Alfred-In-His-Head, and the musing on how Gordon is so close to Batman but so far from Bruce is wonderfully bittersweet.
no subject
Date: 2008-08-28 09:48 pm (UTC)Yes, the fact that Gordon is close to Batman and not to Bruce is very difficult to overcome in fics, I think. I prefer Bruce/Gordon, but it's not easy to write.

AAAAAAHAHAHA. I LOVE YOU. MARRY ME.
Plus, I uh...sort of hate you a little bit for writing better than me even though English is my first language. Curse you and your awesomeness

Date: 2008-08-26 07:55 pm (UTC)Yes! This wonderful piece picks up on something that has encamped itself in my brain lately, namely the difference between Bruce/Gordon and Batman/Gordon.
I sincerely hope you do write more of this. It would be such a shame if you don't.
(Oh and Alfred is totally FTW!)

Date: 2008-08-28 10:01 pm (UTC)Yes, the difference between Bruce/Gordon and Batman/Gordon is quite essential. It's almost like Bruce and Batman were two different people when it comes to Gordon. He trusts Batman and even with all this mystery they are connected, Gordon sees in Batman a fellow defender of Gotham. In the same time, he sees Bruce Wayne as some rich boy who's wasting his time and money.
I prefer Bruce/Gordon, but is't not easy, that's for sure.
I don't plan to write more of this, but who knows, if inspiration strikes... ;)

Date: 2008-08-26 09:11 pm (UTC)Hahaha! This was adorable. I kind of hope you write more of it, but it's great as a one-shot, too. :)

Date: 2008-08-26 09:26 pm (UTC)And you did very well!!
I like how you describe Bruce's state of mind : he's depressed and yet totally funny (mind talking is always made of win)!
Bonus for Alfred who rocks my socks!
The last paragraph is so true : it's quite depressing (as Bruce/gordon fangirl)...
Please continue writting even if english is not your first language (the fact you tried give me hope :)!

Date: 2008-08-28 10:09 pm (UTC)I'm Bruce/Gordon fangirl too, but these guys don't have an easy way, not like Batman and Gordon. Bruce and Batman are like two different people when it comes to relations with Gordon.
I don't plan to write more of this, but maybe in the future I'll try to write in English again, it wasn't as scary as I'd tought ;)
